Frame of Mind

The transition from one religion to another is not an easy one. This is especially true if you were raised as a Christian, and are now beginning to learn about Wicca. Since this is the situation I found myself in in 1991, this is what I will talk about here. If there is anyone reading this who has come to Wicca from a religion other than Christianity, and you would like to share your experiences with others, please let me know, and I will arrange for it.

Obviously, the first thing that comes to mind when you think about leavng Christianity for Wicca is God. What will God think? Will I go to Hell now? It is difficult to go from believing in God to believeing in the God and the Goddess. As Wiccans we believe that there is balance in everything. Everything as qualities of both good and evil, light and dark, male and female. That is why we cannot accept the concept of a male god, especially since the Bible itself says that God created man in his own image. Then why are females so different than males? Yes, of course, there are the basic similarities...we are both human, we walk on 2 feet, we are mammals, but it goes beyond this. Aside from the physical differences between man and woman, there are many others as well. Before I go on, I would just like to say that whatever I say here is not intended to sound biased towards one sex or the other. Yes, I am going on a little bit of stereotyping here, but from what I have learned in my life experience so far, what I will use as examples are true in many cases.

Women tend to be more emotional than men. It is not uncommon to see a woman cry in public, but when was the last time you saw a man cry? How many relationships have been broken apart because of the difficulty men have in saying "I love you"? Women have that "women's intuition", that men can only wish they had. I'm sure you all have experienced that time when your mother or your wife just KNEW what you were doing, without having to ask, and just KNEW when you were lying and when you were not.

It is because of this duality in everyting, that we believe in the Goddess as well as the God. I (and this is just how I feel) believe that there is an even higher force that the God and Goddess, which I refer to as The All. The All is everything, yet nothing....male and female combined, good and evil in one. Because of this, it is not possible for us as humans to understand it, so it appears to us in a form which we can understand...the God and Goddess. This is the same concept used by Christianity to explain the birth of Jesus Christ. Yes, he was human, but he was God reborn as a human, so he could relate to us on our level. Keeping this in mind, it is safe to say that, because of the differences in beliefs of all types of people, we all worship the same god. S/he may have a different name or appearance, but it is just how The All chooses to appear to us as an individual. This is one of the issues your mind will be dealing with for your first year or so withing the Craft.

Another thing is the holidays. In Christianity, you just know when the 'big' holidays are coming (Easter + Christmas for example). This is because it is drilled into your mind from the time you are very young. When you first start learning about Wicca, the thought of having 8 new holidays to remember may seem overwhelming. Give it some time, and this feeling will pass. The Wiccan holiday are (not all, but in general) based around what the earth is doing, like the changing of the seasons. You know when the seasons are changing, even without a calendar (you know it's almost winter when it starts to get colder that normal). After your first year, you will begin to 'feel' the holidays coming on, just as do other holidays.

Yet another thing to keep in mind, and this goes especially for all you former Christians out there, is that everytime you make a mistake, you do not have to run to church to make your confession. In Wicca, we acknowledge and accept the fact that nobody is perfect, and everyone makes mistakes. If you are sorry for what you did, then the God/dess knows that, and that is all that is important. It's kind of silly anyway to think that if you go out and kill someone, then tell a priest who has you say 4 Hail Marys, that you will be forgiven. Especially if you are planning on killing someone else as soon as you leave the church.

Which reminds me of something else I should mention. Growing up as a Catholic, there were times when I was afraid of God, priests, and nuns. Since I have found Wicca, I have never felt that. There is no way you can fear the Goddess or the God, and all the High Priests and Priestesses I have met are the nicest people. Nobody is going to pull a power trip on you and tell you you must do what they say in order to get to heaven. Don't get me wrong, there are some bad seeds in every group. There are people out there who claim to be Wiccan, but are just in it for power. They have no respect for the true meaning. These are the people you should avoid at all costs, except to get a good laugh.

As you start to learn more about Witchcraft, you should start to look around at the world. The next time you go for a walk, or go shopping, look at the people and animals you see. Try to notice things that you wouldn't normally. For example, try looking for the feminine side of a man peeking through (a good time to see this would be to catch a father with a new baby). You may be surprised at what you find.
